Dr. Evans first became interested in medicine through service work in Latin America with Amigos de las Americas in the early 1970’s. After graduating from Cal he attended UCSF Med School, and matched in the Santa Rosa Family Practice residency program. All the while he pursued international health opportunities throughout Central and South America, while focusing on Emergency Medicine opportunities in Sonoma County. From 1988-1990, as the on site medical director for a rural clinic on Lake Victoria in Kenya, he served as the only physician in a 50 mile radius routinely treating 100 plus patients per day. Upon his return he achieved board certification in Emergency Medicine while working as a staff physician at Ukiah Valley Medical Center Emergency Department.

In 1997 he became CEO of Pacific Redwood Medical Group and has lead the group by consensus for the past 18 years. During that time the group has grown from 12 fulltime employees to 33 fulltime employees and 15 part time employees, developing a billing company, the Hospitalist program, and a membership primary care office. In addition to his work at PRMG Dr. Evans has served as TB Controller for Mendocino County since 1995 and CD Controller since 2012. He was Medical Director of Calstar Air Ambulance in Ukiah from 1998 to 2012. As chairman of the EMS committee he has served on the UVMC Medical Executive committee since 1997 and is currently serving as the Chief of Staff of UVMC.

On his mission statement to medical school his goal was to settle in rural California and provide primary care to the underserved in his community. Since he came to UVMC in 1991, his vision and dream has been to draw young resident family physicians to our area to help bolster the primary care services needed in this rural county. He assembled the team that led the charge to develop a Family Practice Residency Program and in May, 2015 Adventist Health approved their proposal. Dr. Evans will continue his work toward this goal, believing it will forever positively change the landscape of healthcare in Mendocino County.

Dr. Evans lives with his fiancé, Lisa Laird, RN in Healdsburg. Together they have six grown children who make them proud: Daniel and his wife Jenny both teach at Stanford, Jessica is enrolled at UCSB, Carolyn graduated CU Boulder, Katy is enrolled at NYU, Kenneth is enrolled at Cal and Alex is enrolled at UOP. On their off time the perfect vacation would be a family float down one of the wild and scenic whitewater rivers or an afternoon ride on their bikes.
